The events in Boston have trumped most news from around the world, but events continue to make headlines in Asia. The latest situation with North Korea took a turn on Tuesday as leadership from the North reacted to protests that were conducted in South Korea in which effigies of North Korean leadership were burned. The North said that South Korea must apologize for the demonstrations (comprised of less than a dozen people each) before any positive dialogue could begin.

The situation in North Korea is so fluid, it is better at the moment to just highlight some of the developments rather than try and speculate as to what the next 24 hours might bring.

In a move that could help pull tensions down, South Korean leadership has asked the North for dialogue concerning the Kaesong manufacturing zone which sits 10km inside North Korea. More than 53,000 workers and about $469.9 million USD in annual sales count on North Korea agreeing to open this zone back up. The North closed it late last week and banned South Korean owners to enter the zone. This is a double-edged sword for the North, they count on the annual GDP contribution from the zone and hurt themselves just as much. But, this placates to the North and puts Kim back in the driver’s seat with regard to the South. He can cite this internally as a “victory” against the South since they are essentially begging him to reconsider and reopen the zone. It plays to his desire for power.

Intelligence sources say that the North is currently playing a bit of cat and mouse with three very different types of rocket launchers. Two of the largest medium-range missiles that

Let’s say on the outset that none of the parties in the region want a war. Deep down, even the North Koreans (assuming they have underestimated the force with which they face) don’t want to tangle with the US and South Korea collectively. China and Russia have both told Kim to “tone it down” and has asked the United States to show the restraint expected of the world’s greatest superpower (essentially).

For instance, there are reports all over the media about the North moving a medium range missile to its east coast.

There is a report circulating through several international sources regarding a shipment of advanced missile launchers from Saudi Arabia to Syrian rebel forces. According to these reports, these launchers are capable of sending multiple missiles into an area from about 70 kilometers away. Analysts believe that these missiles might be used to make a final push to take over an airport facility near the key Syrian city of Aleppo. Aleppo has been the scene of intense fighting between Syrian Government forces and the Free Syrian Army.

By now the bulk of the high drama is over and most are focused on what the banks in that nation are going to look like when they open for the first time in two weeks. The rules will prohibit the depositors from stripping out their assets right away – especially the large depositors that have seen their assets frozen and will soon have them taxed away. The real question now is what happens to any economy that was barely functioning before and will now have some real issues. This is a nation that has nothing with which to work – at least until it manages to find a way to develop the gas reserves that have been located offshore. The only basis for the Cypriot economy has been tourism and that has taken a hit from the economic mess in the rest of Europe. It didn’t help that Cyprus had many years of

When we think about the billions upon billions of dollars that flow from the US worldwide for aid, what we don’t think about on a daily basis is where those funds go. A significant amount of them go to the “refugee” population. These are people that have been driven out of their homes by war and famine. They have very little – normally the clothes on their backs. They have no jobs, little hope, and no future. That’s why the most strategic, top thinkers in the world believe that there is not only a strong humanitarian reason, but also an economic reason for getting involved in certain conflicts. Improving the global refugee problem is a big deal – and one that we don’t think about very often.

The data is a bit difficult to get to, but one statistic showed that in 2007, US Private Assistance for foreign aid was $71.2 billion alone – while government spending on foreign aid in 2011 was $49.5 billion. These are rough figures. Far more

As a result, we typically get a wave of new legislation and perhaps some sweeping change that many won’t like.

China has instituted a number of actions – including the approval of a major dam projected along the Nu River in southwest China’s Unnan province. There will be a series of 4 dams used to produce hydroelectricity along the Nu River – but that isn’t the controversy. The controversy is that there will be about 60,000 Chinese that will lose their homes in this one act. After a week in which the woeful Malian army combined with French troops swept through much of the north of the country there are all sorts of problems that suggest a very lengthy engagement.
There are many conditions of this test that are absolutely “wrong” and the repercussions should be severe from the international community – but frankly – what can they do?
